How can we support undergraduate STEM students outside of the classroom? In this workshop hosted by the AAAS-IUSE Initiative, speakers discuss different approaches to supporting students throughout their undergraduate STEM career – through a summer bridge program and multi-layered mentoring. First, Dr. Lauren Griggs discusses the successes of a summer bridge program for incoming first-year engineering students and the take-aways for other STEM majors interested in implementing similar programs. Next, Dr. Maryam Darbeheshti shares strategies for continuing to support undergraduate STEM students via multi-layered mentorship. Overall, this workshop provides key take-aways for participants looking to support undergraduate STEM students beyond the classroom.
