Conducting original research is shown to improve a student’s efficacy and sense of belonging in STEM. Learn how to design courses around undergraduates’ research opportunities.

Dr. Emma Goodwin will introduce the concept of Course-based Undergraduate Research Experiences (CUREs), which are courses where students conduct novel research that is broadly relevant to people outside of the course. CUREs offer a way to increase equity and broaden participation in undergraduate research.

Dr. Oliver Hyman will demonstrate CUREs in practice by showcasing a cost-effective, scalable, and transferable CURE designed for large enrollment introductory biology labs that uses DNA barcoding to identify local species of plants, fungi, and invertebrates to document species richness in local habitats.
