The Supporting and Advancing Geoscience Education at Two-Year Colleges (SAGE 2YC) project is a national professional development (PD) program for geoscience and other STEM instructors at community colleges. Our model of sustained PD included substantial leadership development to achieve the project goals of helping implement evidence-based instructional and co-curricular practices that support student success, broaden participation, and facilitate students’ career pathways. The workshop will provide examples of how SAGE 2YC provided PD focused on leadership development and how faculty change agent teams developed action plans, led workshops, or other PD activities building from the project PD. Participants will discuss the development of faculty as grassroots leaders, sharing ideas for effective practices. They will also explore approaches for giving faculty opportunities to practice leadership through (1) developing and implementing department or campus action plans associated with the project, leading to institutional change, and (2) having teams lead PD on their campus or region, expanding the reach of the project. We will consider how these approaches might work in single or multiple discipline projects and the value of having teams from the same institution. Workshop participants will discuss their experiences and how they might adapt these approaches to their own projects.
